Poisoned Blade Review

468 pages
Jessamy is moving up the ranks of the Fives—the complex athletic contest favored by the lowliest Commoners and the loftiest Patrons in her embattled kingdom. Pitted against far more formidable adversaries, success is Jes's only option, as her prize money is essential to keeping her hidden family alive. She leaps at the chance to tour the countryside and face more competitors, but then a fatal attack on Jes's traveling party puts her at the center of the war that Lord Kalliarkos—the prince she still loves—is fighting against their country's enemies. With a sinister overlord watching her every move and Kal's life on the line, Jes must now become more than a Fives champion...She must become a warrior.

Review:
I enjoyed reading the second novel in this series although I have to admit it left me wanting a bit more. Jessamy is dealing with the aftermath of her leap up the Fives rank and discovers that it isn't all rewarding as she thought it would be. Jes has to deal with the fact that she betrayed Kal and also has to continue hiding her mother and sisters from Gargaron who believes them dead at his order. The romance between Kal and Jes isn't a major focus for the majority of the novel, but we get to see some interesting progress towards the end. Gargaron's plan to take over the empire puts Jes right in the middle with no choice but to continue helping him. Navigating through all of the court intrigues is especially hard for Jes since she is neither Efean or Patron so she has no real status or trust for either side. I enjoyed seeing the growth in Jes although I wished she was more decisive and bold in the things she does. This book has a fair amount of action and by the end I couldn't wait to see what the next entry into this series will hold. I would recommend this book to those who like fantasy novels but definitely make sure to pick up Court of Fives before reading this one.

United as One Review

449 pages

The Mogadorians have invaded Earth. Their warships loom over our most populated cities, and no country will risk taking them head on. The Garde are all that stand in the way, but they’ll need an army of their own to win this fight.
They’ve teamed up with the US military, but it might not be enough. The Garde need reinforcements, and they’ve found them in the most unexpected place. Teenagers from across the globe, like John Smith’s best friend, Sam, have developed abilities. So John and the others must get to them before the Mogs, because if they don’t their enemies will use these gifted teens for their own sinister plan.
But after all the Mogadorians have taken from John—his home, his family, his friends, and the person he loves most—he might not want to put any more lives in danger. He’s got nothing left to lose, and he’s just discovered he has been given an incredible new Legacy. Now he can turn himself into the ultimate weapon. So will he risk his life to save the world, or will he realize that power in numbers will save us all?

Review:
Anytime I wonder what else the Pittacus Lore series has to offer I am shown that there is always so much more! As the conclusion to the story of the Garde vs the Mogadorians, it is both satisfying and complete. John has been through so much pain and has grown as a leader of the Garde. While a lot of his personal struggle has been hard for him to get through, it is interesting to see the strength of character that forms from his tragedies. The remaining members of the Garde are all scattered but they eventually make their way back together to face the Mogadorians one last time. Humans developing legacies is also a fascinating addition and it is interesting to see the role they play in the battle against the Mogadorians. Along the way there is plenty of action and heart-stopping moments which culminate into an epic final battle that you won't forget. If you love epic science-fiction novels then this series is for you. Make sure to pick up the first 6 books before diving into this one!
