Midnight Thief Review

368 pages

Growing up on Forge’s streets has taught Kyra how to stretch a coin. And when that’s not enough, her uncanny ability to scale walls and bypass guards helps her take what she needs.
But when the leader of the Assassins Guild offers Kyra a lucrative job, she hesitates. She knows how to get by on her own, and she’s not sure she wants to play by his rules. But he’s persistent—and darkly attractive—and Kyra can’t quite resist his pull.
Tristam of Brancel is a young Palace knight on a mission. After his best friend is brutally murdered by Demon Riders, a clan of vicious warriors who ride bloodthirsty wildcats, Tristam vows to take them down. But as his investigation deepens, he finds his efforts thwarted by a talented thief, one who sneaks past Palace defenses with uncanny ease.
When a fateful raid throws Kyra and Tristam together, the two enemies realize that their best chance at survival—and vengeance—might be to join forces. And as their loyalties are tested to the breaking point, they learn a startling secret about Kyra’s past that threatens to reshape both their lives.

Review:
This novel is an absolute amazing combination of action, adventure with underlying mystery! Set in what seems to be a medieval time, this story is told in third person from Kyra and Tristam's point of view. Kyra is the focus and main character of this story, and she is an amazing heroine although she's also a thief. Kyra hasn't had the best life and enjoys living on the edge to survive. Tristam has had an easier go at it, and has been raised to become a knight and serve the Council. Kyra and Tristam, despite their different upbringings, have something inside them that just wants the people of their city to be treated better. I love the fact that Kyra doesn't let her background or others influence her to do something that she knows to be wrong. I also love that Tristam will do what's right for anyone no matter how he has to find a way to do it. The true nature of the Demon Riders is a definite twist in this story, as is finally figuring out why Kyra has the abilities that she does. There is a bit of romance in this novel but it doesn't distract from the action. This story is explosive, exciting and culminates into a decisive end. I absolutely loved this story and can't wait to see what's next for Kyra's future adventures. I definitely recommend this book if you like fantasy fiction.

Movie Monday: Hercules

Technically, Hercules isn't a movie based on a book. However, Hercules is a part of Greek mythology, which before coming to the big screen, is a story that reaches far back into the annals of time. Dwayne Johnson plays Hercules and I'm quite interested to see how his acting skills portray the legendary name. This modern day retelling of Hercules opens this Friday so grab some popcorn and check it out!

BEA 2014 with Ms Book Queen

Sadly this year Ms Book Queen was only able to attend one day of Book Expo America, but what an enjoyable day that was! Once again it was a busy day as per usual, visiting the different booths and meeting authors. Lines were long to get autographs from some particularly notable authors such as Stan Lee and Scott Westerfield to name a few.

McGraw Hill once again stole the show with their hit accessory giveaway "The Big Red Bag" which was immensely helpful in carrying around the heavy books all day long. Everyone was always moving along to their next destination but there were plenty of opportunities when waiting on line or just stopping to chat to leave a business card and create a wealth of networking opportunity.

It was once again a pleasure and great experience to have the privilege of being invited as press to BEA and we can't wait to see what they have in store for us next year!

Author Autograph lines

It was a pleasure meeting author Scott Westerfield and getting a copy of his new book Afterworlds!

The highlight was definitely getting to meet the great Stan Lee!

Some LEGO Star Wars which appealed to the geek in me.

Rushing to and fro to get advanced copies, author signings, and panels.

The Shadow Throne Review

336 pages
War has come to Carthya. It knocks at every door and window in the land. And when Jaron learns that King Vargan of Avenia has kidnapped Imogen in a plot to bring Carthya to its knees, Jaron knows it is up to him to embark on a daring rescue mission. But everything that can go wrong does. His friends are flung far and wide across Carthya and its neighbouring lands. In a last-ditch effort to stave off what looks to be a devastating loss for the kingdom, Jaron undertakes what may be his last journey to save everything and everyone he loves. But even with his lightning-quick wit, Jaron cannot forestall the terrible danger that descends on him and his country. Along the way, will he lose what matters most? And in the end, who will sit on Carthya's throne?

Review:
The Ascendance Trilogy has been amazing from start to finish. Jaron is the type of hero who isn't perfect but does what he thinks is right with an exceptional level of cunning. Jaron doesn't disappoint in this final novel in the trilogy. As usual Jaron takes us on a journey where we don't really know all of his plans and are left to be delighted by his intelligence in foreseeing how to save his country and Imogen. While Imogen and Jaron haven't had the easiest relationship, he will still do anything to save her. The plot twists are probably my favorite thing about this series, you think the story is going in one direction then it just drops a bomb on you out of nowhere. There is plenty of action and adventure in this novel and it takes us on quite an exciting ride coming to the conclusion. I definitely recommend that you read this novel if you like adventure stories but make sure to check out The False Prince and The Runaway King first.

Movie Monday: Veronica Mars

Veronica Mars was a show that I absolutely loved. I truly wish there were more seasons, so I am glad that they have rebooted this show into a movie! This movie is basically about a high school reunion Veronica comes back in town for although she's also back to solve another mystery. All of her friends and some enemies are back to help her like in the good old days. If you've never seen Veronica Mars go watch all of the seasons before this movie is released on Friday! Go now!

Movie Monday: 300 Rise of an Empire

More than likely everyone reading this post has seen 300. While an excellent movie, it did have a pretty sad ending. This sequel, titled 300: Rise of an Empire, continues the battle and shows the full force of Greek soldiers pitted against the Persian army. This movie looks action-filled so I'm excited to check it out. It comes out this week, March 7th, so if you haven't seen the original 300 make sure to check that out first!

Killer Frost Review

384 pages
Release date: February 25th, 2014
I’ve battled the Reapers of Chaos before–and survived. But this time I have a Bad, Bad Feeling it’s going to be a fight to the death … most likely mine. Yeah, I’ve got my psychometry magic, my talking sword, Vic–and even the most dangerous Spartan on campus at my side, in Logan freaking Quinn, but I’m no match for Loki, the evil Norse god of chaos. I may be Nike’s Champion, but at heart, I’m still just Gwen Frost, that weird Gypsy girl everyone at school loves to gossip about. Then someone I love is put in more danger than ever before, and something inside me snaps. This time, Loki and his Reapers are going down for good … or I am.

Review (ARC):
The Mythos Academy series is one that I am so glad to have seen grow and develop into a story that you just can't put down. I have to say I'm sad to see Gwen's tale come to an end. Gwen has become a stronger and worthy champion of Nike, and just wants to protect her friends and family. Gwen has a lot to worry about as the time to her showdown with Loki draws near. There isn't a calm before the storm, rather Loki's followers seem to be making a point to make more trouble before the final battle. In the midst of it all Gwen and Logan's romance has reached a point where it's slightly sappy but still enjoyable with every thing else going on. There is a lot of action and of course some romance which keeps this novel entertaining and exciting as it comes to the end. I definitely recommend this entire series especially if you like mythology.
