Samsung x The Hunger Games #StandWithTheMockingjay

Samsung hosted a launch party with The Hunger Games to preview their VR created trailer for the final movie, Mockingjay Part 2. The drinks were flowing and waiters in district appropriate wear flowed through the crowd with drinks and treats. There were different stations using various Samsung devices to create a Hunger Games poster featuring yourself and an app to make you costume-ready.

The trailer itself was an exciting and well-crafted view of Mockingjay Part 2. Fans will have an opportunity to experience the VR trailer from 11am to 7pm at Pop 14 from Friday, October 9th to Sunday, October 11th. The experience will also launch on Samsung VR devices Monday, October 12th.

Refinery29 x Samsung: Fashion Meets Tech

Last night I had the pleasure of attending the preview of the Samsung Gear S2 hosted by Refinery 29. It was an amazing night full of photos, music, drinks, and of course tech.

The DJ for the night was Brendan Fallis and he did an amazing job spinning. There was a booth where you could design and choose between a shirt, bag or luggage tag to commemorate the event.

Of course the reason we were all there was to check out the Gear S2. It comes in two different designs. The Gear S2 Classic has a leather band while the main Gear S2 has a sporty rubber strap. I think what impressed me the most about these watches is that they both actually look like watches with the added benefit of the wearable tech.

The Samsung S2 will definitely be giving the Apple Watch a run for their money. So which will you choose?

Qualify Review

600 pages

The year is 2047. An extinction-level asteroid is hurtling toward Earth, and the descendents of ancient Atlantis have returned from the stars in their silver ships to offer humanity help.
But there’s a catch.
They can only take a tiny percent of the Earth’s population back to the colony planet Atlantis. And in order to be chosen, you must be a teen, you must be bright, talented, and athletic, and you must Qualify.
Sixteen-year-old Gwenevere Lark is determined not only to Qualify but to rescue her entire family.
Because there’s a loophole.
If you are good enough to Qualify, you are eligible to compete in the brutal games of the Atlantis Grail, which grants all winners the laurels, high tech luxuries, and full privileges of Atlantis Citizenship. And if you are in the Top Ten, then all your wildest wishes are granted… Such as curing your mother’s cancer.
There is only one problem.
Gwen Lark is known as a klutz and a nerd. While she’s a hotshot in classics, history, science, and languages, the closest she’s come to sports is a backyard pool and a skateboard.
This time she is in over her head, and in for a fight of her life, against impossible odds and world-class competition—including Logan Sangre, the most amazing guy in her class, the one she’s been crushing on, and who doesn’t seem to know she exists.
Because every other teen on Earth has the same idea.
You Qualify or you die.

Review:

It's hard to describe the feelings invoked in me while reading this book, but one thing is certain, by the end I absolutely wanted more. I think I can safely say that this is one of the most enjoyable novels I have read so far in 2015. The storyline was pleasantly different and original when it comes to the story of Atlantis. Imagine Atlantis as a super advanced part of the ancient human race who destroyed themselves and had to flee the planet and settle on a distant one. The Atlanteans eventually come back to save humankind from impending disaster. Enter, the Qualification trials. Although the majority of the book is taken up with the training for this competition, the action is not at all lacking. This story is told from Gwen's point of view which at first I found annoying, because she isn't very strong, seems very insecure, and is preoccupied with bullies. However, as the story went on, I could see Gwen growing and becoming the type of heroine you can't help but root for. Gwen isn't perfect and good at everything but she goes out of her way for the people that she loves the most. There's a little bit of a love triangle, although I don't think even Gwen has realized it yet, between herself, an Atlantean and a human. It doesn't completely develop so I'm interested to see where it goes in the next novel. The brutality of the competitions were actually a total shock to me and it seems like the Atlanteans are prepping these teens for something more. I cannot wait for the next book to be released in this seriesso that I can see what else is in store for the Qualify competitors. I definitely recommend this novel if you love exciting dystopian and science fiction books.

Red Queen Review

320 pages
Release Date: February 10th, 2015
The poverty stricken Reds are commoners, living under the rule of the Silvers, elite warriors with god-like powers. To Mare Barrow, a 17-year-old Red girl from The Stilts, it looks like nothing will ever change. Mare finds herself working in the Silver Palace, at the centre of those she hates the most. She quickly discovers that, despite her red blood, she possesses a deadly power of her own. One that threatens to destroy Silver control. But power is a dangerous game. And in this world divided by blood, who will win?

Review (ARC):
This book was one of those rare 5-star reads for me. I had a truly amazing experience reading it! The world of the Silvers and Reds is one of those dystopian stories that pulls you in expanding the imagination. The Silvers are the nobles of this society, with god-like powers that gives them both superiority and the ability to oppress the Reds. The Reds are the commoners, the people who live in general poverty, never expecting a better life. Mare is the main character and she is just phenomenal. Mare is a strong and capable heroine who discovers that she may have the power to topple the Silver hierarchy. This power sucks her into the intrigue of the Silver royal family and the court that surrounds them. Cal and Maven are the two princes of the royal family, as well as Mare's love interests, and neither are what they seem. There is a lot of action since the Silvers use their powers to battle one another in an attempt to better their status in their royal world. This novel is ripe with secrets that go beyond what readers might expect and all kinds of twists that make it an exciting and surprising read. I absolutely recommend this novel to those who like dystopian novels and superhuman.
